Dyllon's first trip to the ER

Here is something that I hope no mother has to go through. Dyllon had his first trip to the ER last night. Here is what happened.

I was picking up the living room for the 15th time last night at about 5. Dyllon walks in the room from the kitchen. He had been in the fridge getting himself a drink. I noticed he was chewing on something plastic. At first glance it looked like a medicine syringe. Every mom of a young child knows what those look like. I sat down to feed Garrett and Dyllon wants to sit on my lap. So I let him and he lays his head on my shoulder and says he is tired and falls asleep.

So I am sitting there with both of my kids asleep on me when I look over that the end table by the chair and see the medicine syringe sitting there. But it looks a little odd. I pick it up to get a closer look and lo and behold it's not a medicine syringe but the tube part of a shot we have to give the dogs in case of a bee sting. At first I freak out because I don't know what he did with needle part but I glance at the floor and see it sitting by the tv with the cap still on. Then I realize that I am not sure if he had swollowed any of it because by the time I saw him with it, it was empty but he still had it in his mouth.

So with tears falling down my cheeks I dial the vets phone number so I can find out what was in there. I was on hold for about 10 minutes while they found the file from 3 years ago. They tell me it's dex something or other. And that they weren't sure how he was going to react to it and since I didn't know if he had swollowed it or not, I needed to take him to the dr. to get checked out just in case.

I call my wonderful neighbor and she is able to take Garrett for me. I wrap Dyllon up in his blankie, without shoes of course and head to community care. By the time I get there is I 6:00. The male nursew comes in and asks me why I am there. I have the syringe with me and exlpain what I had found. I give them the number for the vet since I hadn't been able to write it down and he leaves. Well Dyllon had been terrified of the dr ever since he had to have his tonsils and adnoids out and tubes put in when he was 9 months. But I get him to calm down and we start to have a little fun.

The nurse comes back in and says they weren't able to get ahold of my vet but they had another one on the phone and I needed to talk to him. He tells me that it is either benadryl or a steroid. Well, I remember my husband telling me that it was a steroid. The vet then tells me that I need to induce vomiting and give him this charcoal substance. But of course does community care have the things we need to accomplish this? Of course not. So they tell us we need to head to the er. So I once again wrap him up and head to the hospital.

We get to the er and we get right in. I explain to the male nurse there what had happened and he treats me like a complete idiot. He kept giving me looks like, "Why was she ever allowed to have children?" And I am thinking "Back off, this is the first major injury of sorts in almost 3 years. Am I really that bad of a mother?" Anyway, he asks me what was in it and when I way I am not sure except that is was a steroid for the dogs (Community care didn't tell me the name of it) he gives me the look again. He asks me how much, again I don't know, again the look. He leaves and the dr comes in and tells me that he doesn't think Dyllon is going to react because he would have by now. It had, at that time, been two hours since I found him with the syringe. The dr then says they want us to stay until they find out exactly what was in there and how much.

Let me tell you that there is only so much to entertain an active almost 3 year old in an er room. He wanted to play with all the need tubes and push all the neat buttons. They had one book that was a Cookie Monster book that consisted of 4 pages. But we made it through. Jeff was finally able to come and he showed up right as we were leaving. He had to get a rental from work because they were working on the truck. Dyllon is fine but it sure was an eventful night. They gave me tons of info about keeping things like that out of the reach of children. Again, the LOOK.. That was how we spent our family night.

That sounds awful! I'm sorry that happened. And no, you're not a bad mother, my kids have eaten all sorts of things!
